The neglect of contemporary music in the teaching curricula of European and US music academies and colleges was the principal reason for the establishment of the Pro-Bio Foundation in 1997. The basic aim of the Foundation is to promote contemporary music by providing financial support of musicians, composers and musical ensembles, especially string quartets who are involved in music-of-our-time. Since its inception the Pro-Bio Foundation has:

• Founded a young British string quartet
• Enabled young composers to prepare new works
• Funded the production of CDs by various artists and composers
• Established the first summer school [workshop] for contemporary quartet music, in Blonay Sqitzerland
